Summary

This innovative microfluidic biosensor platform enables rapid, high-sensitivity detection of multiple biomarkers from a single drop of blood. Developed at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, the technology leverages novel nano-structured sensing surfaces integrated into a disposable cartridge format, making advanced diagnostics accessible outside traditional laboratory settings.

Description

The platform combines microfluidic sample preparation with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to achieve detection limits comparable to laboratory-grade ELISA assays. A proprietary surface functionalization technique enables multiplexed detection of up to 12 analytes on a single chip, with results available in under 15 minutes.

The system architecture consists of a reusable handheld reader and single-use cartridges. Each cartridge contains pre-loaded reagents in lyophilized form, eliminating cold-chain requirements and extending shelf life to 18 months at ambient temperature. The reader communicates via Bluetooth with a companion mobile application for result visualization, data logging, and cloud synchronization.

Validation studies conducted in partnership with Massachusetts General Hospital demonstrated 95.2% sensitivity and 98.7% specificity across a panel of cardiac biomarkers, with strong correlation (R² = 0.97) to reference laboratory methods.
