The adjustable mitral ring, a device designed to improve surgical repair of the mitral valve, devised and developed at theCHUV by Professor Piergiorgio Tozzi of the Department of Cardiac Surgery with the support of thePACTT, has been featured on the cover of the March issue of the *ASAIO*.
ASAIO, founded in 1955, is the oldest and most renowned international association of scientists, engineers and investors who come together to shape the future of clinical practice relating to medical devices.
The device that had the honour of appearing on the cover page enables the correction of residual or recurrent mitral regurgitation following surgery, without the need for the patient to undergo a second operation. The procedure is carried out without anaesthesia and is equivalent to a diagnostic procedure such as a coronary angiogram. It is regarded as a major breakthrough in the non-invasive treatment of mitral regurgitation. From this year onwards, patients will be able to benefit from it as part of a pilot study.
This is a highly promising invention by theCHUV, the exploitation rights for which are managed by thePACTT – the joint technology transfer office of theUNIL and theCHUV – in particular by Ms Céline Lafourcade. Development and production have been entrusted to a start-up.
